Mentorship

2007-2008 Monte Jade Executive Mentorship Program:
Mentoring for Professional Success

Asian Americans represent one of the fastest growing segments of the professional workforce in the US. While many have found success with high-paying professional positions, as a group it often remains under-represented in the corporate boardroom and senior management ranks.

The Monte Jade Executive Mentorship program is the first of its kind in the Silicon Valley targeted towards supporting Asian-American professionals to advance into executive and leadership positions. It does so by helping participants:

  • Build a personal relationship with top Asian American leaders in Silicon Valley.
  • Learn the paths to success from executives with venture capital, high-tech management, and entrepreneurship experiences.
  • Capture practical advise and wisdom that could make an immediate difference.
  • Network and mingle with executives and other like-minded professionals.

In the program participants meet several times a year, and are assigned mentors who are leaders in the business community. Past mentors have included:

  • Dr. Albert Yu, former SVP at Intel Corp.
  • Mr. Bobby Chao, Managing Director of DFJ DragonFund
  • Dr. Cheng-Chung Shih, President & CEO of Capella Microsystems, Inc.
  • Ms. Lilly Chung, Partner at Deloitte & Touche, LLP
  • Mr. Edward Yang, former VP/CTO at HP
  • Dr. Kenneth Fong, Founder of Kenson Ventures and Clontech Laboratories
  • Mr. Lee Ting, Chairman of Lenovo Group Ltd.
  • . . . and many others

Format

The program is designed to achieve two main objectives: 1) allow very small group and one-on-one interactions, and 2) encourage continuity in relationship with mentors as well as among participants.

About 30 spots are avaiable and there will be 6~7 mentors assigned for a participant to mentor ratio of 5:1. Each of the 5 participants in the same group is considered as a "family". There are two Saturday morning sessions each with dedicated topics. Each session would include a combination of panel discussions, speakers, and small group breakouts. During the small group breakouts, the 30 participants will break into their respective families along with their mentors. During these sessions, games or exercises will be used to allow each participant to have time with his/her mentor and other "family" members. The remaining time is used for mentors' and participants' sharing of their valuable personal experience.

In addition, there will be a small "family" gathering between the "family" and its assigned mentor to allow interactions between mentees and mentors in a casual occasion. This could be a lunch gathering or a small group-chat over a cup of coffee.

Just as building a relationship with the mentors is important, networking and learning from fellow participants are just as important. In between the two main sessions, there will be a networking reception to specifically support networking between participants.

After the end of two sessions, mentors will be encouraged to take on between 1 to 3 mentees for continued coaching. This is optional for mentors and MJAA will try to obtain as many mentors to participate as possible. Additional mentors for this one-on-one coaching may come from mentors who did not participate in the two Saturday sessions.
