2009-2010 Monte Jade Executive Mentorship Program: Mentoring for Career Advancement
Starts in October 2009
Asian Americans represent one of the fastest growing segments of the professional workforce in the US. While many have found success with high-paying professional positions, as a group it often remains under-represented in the corporate boardroom and senior management ranks.
The Monte Jade Executive Mentorship program is the first of its kind in the Silicon Valley targeted towards supporting Asian-American professionals to advance into executive and leadership positions. It does so by helping participants:
- Build personal relationships with some of the most accomplished Asian American leaders in Silicon Valley.
- Learn from the successes of other Asian Americans in a wide range of industries, from venture capital, high-tech, to entrepreneurship.
- Get coaching and practical advice that could make an immediate impact.
A primary differentiator of the MJAA Executive Mentorship Program is the continuity provided by the program to give participants ample, multiple opportunities to learn from executive mentors, discuss career development topics within small groups, and broaden their networks.
Each participant is assigned to a mentor who is a leader in the business community and participates in several activities over a six-month period. Each year we line up an exceptional list of mentors, which have included:
- Dr. Albert Yu, Former SVP at Intel
- Dr. David Yen, EVP at Juniper Networks
- Dr. Elizabeth Xu, SVP at Vitria Technology
- Mr. Gary Wang, CEO and Co-founder of Caremax
- Ms. Jenny Ming, Former President of Old Navy
- Ms. Kyung Yoon, Vice Chairman of Heidrick & Struggles International
- Mr. Larry Chang, Retired VP of Finance from HP
- Ms. Lilly Chung, Lead Client Service Partner at Deloitte & Touche
- Mr. Peter Chu, Managing Partner at AsiaTech Ventures and COO of ApaceWave

Format
The primary goal of this program is to provide ample opportunities for mentors and mentees to interact in small group sessions, to foster the development of individual long-term relationships. The program design includes: 1) panel discussion and general session presentations with all participants, 2) small group interactions with a targeted 4:1 mentee to mentor ratio within a , and 3) special topics and venues to encourage dialogue and relationship building.
About 40 spots will be available this year and mentees will be assigned into a mentoring family that best meet their professional development needs. By Mentorship Session 3, participants will be required to identify at least 1 mentor with whom they will commit to keeping in touch for continued coaching. This mentor could be one of the executive mentors or a peer mentor (one of the planning committee members who are usually past program participants, or another participant from their mentoring family.)
